Sabalamby Unnayan Samity (SUS), CFGB-FSL Project, Dhobaura, Mymensingh — Supported by MCC Bangladesh
On August 13, 2026, project staff from Sabalamby Unnayan Samity (SUS) conducted a field visit to observe ongoing activities under the CFGB-FSL (Canadian Foodgrains Bank – Food Security and Livelihoods) Project in Dhobaura Sadar Union and Gamaritola Union, supported by MCC Bangladesh. The visit covered nine participating households across the villages of West Sapmari, Small Sapmari, and Uttar Langoljura, showcasing a diverse range of climate-smart and community-driven livelihood practices.
Households and Activities Visited
The visit included beneficiaries such as Sopna Cicham, Onik Rongdi, Orchona Mankin, Nukul Cicham, Bina Cicham, Nikasha Mrong, Dainnomoni Sangma, Bhojon Lal Roy, and Chondona Hajong, each engaged in various farming and livelihood initiatives supported by the project.
Key activities observed included:
- Mulching methods for vegetable cultivation
- Sack/bag vegetable cultivation, making efficient use of limited space
- Bed method cultivation for improved yield and soil management
- Community water purification for safe drinking water
- Rainwater harvesting to support field vegetable production
- Small business initiatives developed by participating families
- Seed banks to preserve and share quality seeds within the community
- Integrated farming systems at the homestead level, combining crops, livestock, and other resources
Community Initiative and Ongoing Support
Most of the visited families have taken the initiative to cultivate vegetables largely on their own, with SUS providing targeted support to select households to strengthen their efforts. Encouraged by their progress, these families are now preparing for the next planting cycle, focusing on winter vegetable cultivation.
Challenges Faced
Despite their dedication, families encountered several challenges during the monsoon season, including heavy rainfall, storms, and various family-level crises that disrupted farming activities.
Moving Forward
SUS, through the CFGB-FSL project, remains committed to supporting these families as they work to overcome seasonal and personal challenges. Continued technical guidance, resources, and encouragement aim to help households build long-term resilience and food security through sustainable homestead-based agriculture.
