Sonia Akter: Towards Empowerment

Sonia Akter is the inhabitant of Konapara village under Singher Bangla union under Netrakona Sadar Upazila of Netrakona district. Her economical condition was so poor. In 2016, she became a member of the Village Women Group under the Women Empowerment and Gender Equality project. By participating in the group meeting regularly, she was informed how to increase her economic condition. Afterward, she got 07 days of training on cow rearing from the government Youth Development Department, 02 days training on a selection of income-generating activities (IGA), and management from SUS. After getting the training, she became confident to involve in income-generating activities. At first, she discussed with her husband and got a positive response. After starting the shop, she faced different problems. The people of the society could not accept that a woman is doing business. They were not accustomed to this kind of activity in their village. People teased her but she could not stop. Her husband is a rickshaw driver and he extended his support to her. Sonia said that if we ignore the negative words of people then we would be successful.
